<![CDATA[(BATON ROUGE, LA) New federally-ranked hospital star ratings are in and The Spine Hospital of Louisiana at The NeuroMedical Center stands above the competition, receiving a perfect five stars from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). According to CMS data, only seven percent of the 3,500 Medicare-certified hospitals nationwide received the highest rating based on patient satisfaction and experience based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. In addition to being one of only two hospitals in the Greater Baton Rouge and one of 17 in Louisiana to receive the top rating, the new data ranks The Spine Hospital of Louisiana as a Top 100 U.S. hospital (#94 nationally).
HCAHPS has been in use since 2006 to measure patient's perspective of hospital care. The survey is administered to a random sample of patients continuously through the year and includes such topics such as how well nurses and doctors communicated with their patients, how responsive a hospital staff was to patient needs and the overall quietness and cleanliness of a hospital environment.
The new CMS data is viewed as a victory not only for The Spine Hospital of Louisiana, but for all physician-owned hospitals across the country. Despite accounting for only 5% of all U.S. hospitals, physician-owned hospitals represented 84 of the 251 hospitals receiving 5-star ratings. "We are so very honored and proud to provide such compassionate service to our extended community and surrounding states" stated Robert Blair, CEO of The Spine Hospital of Louisiana. "When you couple top ranked patient satisfaction scores with CMS Quality data, you create a dependable winning environment for your customers … our patients. This national recognition is yet another testament to the consistent dedication of our nurses and physicians. Thank you for putting your healthcare needs in our hands. We've got your back!"
It stands to reason that hospitals with the best quality of care will have the most satisfied patients. Ironically, physician-owned hospitals are banned from expanding their services to additional patients under the Affordable Care Act. Physicians Hospitals of America (PHA), the nation's leading association for physician-owned hospitals is appealing to Congress to change existing law so that hospitals with physician ownership can once again expand to meet the growing demand for healthcare services in their communities.
