Recognized Regionally for Effective Implementation of Nurse Burnout Prevention Strategies

The Spine Hospital of Louisiana at The NeuroMedical Center is proud to announce it is the recipient of a LAMMICO Patient Safety Award and Grant. The Spine Hospital was awarded $2000 grant from the region’s largest medical professional liability insurance carrier for its effective implementation of various strategies to prevent or mitigate the effects of nurse burnout.

Studies have shown that as many as 30 to 60 percent of healthcare providers meet the criteria for burnout. The characteristics of burnout include emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and a low sense of personal accomplishment. Burnout contributes to poor quality of life for healthcare professionals. In addition, quality of care and patient safety can be negatively impacted by stress and burnout.

“As one of the busiest spine surgery and pain management hospitals in the country, the Spine Hospital of Louisiana has always gone the extra mile to safeguard our nurses’ wellbeing and mental health because our success depends largely on their contributions,” said Spine Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Kim Pettijohn, MSN, RN, CNOR. “It is wonderful that LAMMICO has recognized the tremendous efforts put forth by our organization to ensure nurses don’t fall victim to nurse burnout.  From our low 4:1 nurse to patient ratio, flexible schedules options, continuing education programs and scholarship opportunities, and regular hospital-wide celebrations, we truly believe we have set our nurses up for success professionally and personally—all of which ultimately translates to better care for our patients.”

The Spine Hospital of Louisiana continues to lead the nation in patient safety and quality of care. According to federal statistics, The Spine Hospital has some of the highest patient satisfaction scores (top 5% nationally) and some of the nation’s lowest hospital acquired infection (HAI) rates (<1%).

The $2000 grant awarded to The Spine Hospital by LAMMICO will be used by its nursing teams for continuing education opportunities and memberships to professional nursing organizations.
