The Spine Hospital of Louisiana at The NeuroMedical Center, the state’s leader in spinal surgery, is pleased to announce it has received a perfect five-star rating from the federal government in Patient Experience for the fourth year in a row. Out of 3,466 eligible hospitals across 50 states, The Spine Hospital was one of just 213 U.S. hospitals to receive the top rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The Spine Hospital has now earned the highest possible hospital rating for Patient Experience every year since the government star rating system first launched in 2015.

The five-star rating granted to The Spine Hospital of Louisiana is based on the CMS’ Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Provider and System (HCAHPS) survey and data collected between July 1, 2016-June 30, 2017. The standardized survey asks discharged patients a series of questions about their recent hospital stay, including core questions about critical aspects of patients’ hospital experiences. HCAHPS Star Ratings then summarize the results of this survey to make it easier for consumers to use the information when choosing a healthcare provider. Hospitals across the nation are given a star rating ranging between 1 (lowest) and 5 (highest).

Spine Hospital survey respondents pointed specifically to the hospital’s exceptional nurse communication, staff responsiveness, and care transition performance when evaluating their individual patient experience. Nearly 100% of respondents said they would recommend The Spine Hospital to family and friends.

“This is a significant victory for our physician-owned hospital, our talented clinical teams, and for Louisiana as a whole,” said Robert D. Blair, Chief Executive Officer of The Spine Hospital of Louisiana. “Our commitment to delivering the south’s most exceptional spine surgery and patient experience is crucial to our organization’s success and outcomes.  Receiving such high scores for a very challenging specialty is a testament to the quality of care consistently provided by our team members.   On behalf of our talented surgeons and dedicated nursing teams, we thank our extended community and surrounding states for entrusting us with their healthcare needs.”

The HCAHPS Star Ratings are viewed as a victory for not only The Spine Hospital of Louisiana, but for the entire physician-owned hospital industry. While physician-owned hospitals make up only 6% of all U.S. hospitals eligible to receive a star rating in 2018,  76 of the nation’s 213  5-star hospitals are physician-owned, further proving that physician-owned hospitals are among the best hospitals in the country in terms of patient satisfaction, quality of care, and cost of care.
